Answer: Our show is about a young girl named Iris who is going through a point in her life where she's realizing that the world is much crueler than it seems, with the help of three narrators the audience is thrown into an extremely poetic and romanticized version of life as an average teenager and is brought to the realization of the difference between life in and out of high school.
Q: What do you like about writing?
A: I, personally, just like creating something that someone somewhere can relate to. I've written several plays, short stories, and I finished and am currently rewriting a novel. It's just great to be able to have all the different thoughts I have on things documented somewhere and to be able to create characters who become like my family really.
Q: What do you like about theatre?
A: I LOVE acting, just everything about acting. I personally prefer film acting over theater, having acted in several movies and commercials, but similar to writing there's just something about creating something that people can fall in love with. I also enjoy the challenge of acting. There was a man that once said to me, "do what you love. You should be drowning in acting, in the business, and not asking for a life float." So yeah, just the whole idea of morphing into another human has always fascinated me and even as far to the point as teaching yourself to breathe again.
Q: What is your favorite play or musical and why?
A: Oh my gosh Sweeney Todd, and why not? Did you know that 98% of it is music? I prefer the movie over the live version to be honest with you (oops).
Q: What has been a interesting or weird or funny experience about writing your play and rehearsing it?
A: Our play deals with some pretty dark and ugly truths, and most of the characters are actually based on people we know and that we're close to. Some of the people even play their characters in the show, so we have to keep it kind of light when we're reading or rehearsing. Everyone in the cast (or almost everyone) is super close so we were conducting a rehearsal at my house, Kelsey had to leave early but oh my gosh she should've been there, but the cast did the show as black preachers and extremely intense spoken word poets like Rudy Francisco and Javon Johnson. I was crying, that was probably the most memorable moment.
Q: What has been your favorite experience in being a part of theatre in your school?
A: Just the family environment. Yeah, theater is hard, after a 6 hour rehearsal with no breaks you get pretty drained but everyone holds each other up and we never fail to laugh. The people that I'm close to in our drama program I'm REALLY close to, we're all so comfortable with each other, it's great. Theater is like a job, we usually spend about 30 hours a week on the stage. You know, there's no better feeling than coming to work everyday and being embraced by the arms of your family. I wouldn't change is for the world.
Thanks, Hannah, and we'll see you on Nov. 14 at UCA!!
