The 2015 Playwrights

The 2015 Arkansas Young Playwrights Competition is just one month away, so this is a perfect time to meet the Playwrights in the Competition.  First up is Jamiel Creer from Maumelle High School.

Jamiel "Jamee" Creer was a senior at Maumelle High School when her play was selected for the 2015 Competition.  This fall, Jamee, 18, is a freshman at Ouachita Baptist University.

Question: Describe your play.
Answer: My play, "Used", is about a girl who finds the meaning of life from a twisted group of people who lost their way in life.

Q: What do you like about writing?
A: I like the thought of creating a new world and inspiring others with just a pen in my hand and measly piece of paper.

Q: What do you like about theatre?
A: I love that I can step into someone else's shoes and become someone else.

Q: What is your favorite play or musical and why?
A: My favorite musical is "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street", not just because of the dark storyline, but because of the well-written music and the twist ending.

Q: What has been an interesting or weird or funny experience in writing your play and rehearsing it?
A: Well, my cast made a parody of the song "Feeling Myself" by BeyoncĂ© in order to make light of my dark play.  My cast is great, and they're motivated to win, not only for me but because they've worked so hard.

Q: What has been your favorite experience in being a part of theatre in your school?
A: My favorite experience with the Maumelle High School drama department is that everyone works to be the best they can be, and also we work towards being a great theatre family.

Thanks, Jamee, and we can't wait to see your play on Nov. 14 at The University of Central Arkansas!
